A community garden in OOS sounds great. I don't know of any others who are already starting one, but an ad in the OSCAR would probably help us find out.
Where are you at on this project? Do you have a spot in mind?
Thanks,
Sarah

Permalink Reply by Gwen Gall on May 14, 2010 at 4:42pm Hi. A community garden in OOS would be a great idea - count me in! I agree that an ad in the OSCAR would be a great way to pull interested people together, and announce a meeting on the events board in the oldottawasouth.ca website.
Permalink Reply by Gwen Gall on May 14, 2010 at 4:45pm Great idea, George.
Also, let webeditor@oldottawasouth.ca know when there is a meeting and she'll go (her alter ego, Citizen Gwen, is very interested in a community garden as well, on a personal level). It may be possible to arrange a meeting place through OSCA, as well. Right now the Ladies' Parlour at Southminster church is being used for meetings until the community centre (Old Firehall) is renovated. They should be moving back in June, and there will be more space, possibly available for a meeting of this kind.

Permalink Reply by Marnie on August 19, 2010 at 12:16am Update on status of community garden planning
Howdy all, just wanted to give a brief update on where this idea has gone.
* I've gathered together a handful of volunteers who want to help establish the garden.
* We presented the community garden idea to OS Watch, the Ottawa South Community Association committee that deals with land use & development issues, and they passed a motion supporting the idea, in principle, of a community garden for the neighbourhood
* We identified a few possible locations for a future garden:
* The open grass area at the far east end of Windsor Park. (Just before the Belmont Ave. entrance).
* The land behind the Lexington apartments (Ottawa Community Housing building) at 507 Riverdale. It seems this patch of land (the grass area, bordered by trees) is owned partly by OCH, and partly by the city as part of Windsor Park.
* A couple spots in Brewer Park
Does anyone know someone who lives in the 507 Riverdale apartments? It would be fantastic to get some of the residents involved and supportive of this.
As always, anyone interested in helping out with establishing the garden, please email me at bellybuh@yahoo.ca and I will keep you in the loop!

Permalink Reply by Gwen Gall on August 19, 2010 at 3:41pm Hi Marnie:
Can I put the gist of this on the Old Ottawa South website today? It will go out tonight in our e-newsletter to several hundred subscribers. I can make the contact different, (such as "contact webeditor@oldottawasouth.ca") instead of yours, if you prefer.
I'm really keen on supporting this initiative! (And eventually getting a little plot of my own, too.)
Cheers,
Gwen
