The soap making project went great.  I used to live in Toronto until December, I got the lye at a HH there.  I took a workshop on soap making before attempting it on my own, here's the info I got from it, and the recipe is at the end I've only ever done the larger batch.  Soap.pdf  The information is big on the plastic gloves, goggles, and gas mask use, but I wouldn't be too overly cautious, just be careful to avoid splashes.  When I did it I used a gas mask with goggles and it ended up just getting in the way, so took them off and was just careful.
